Chris is on the front line

Chris Warren (pictured) did a week´s work experience at the Streatham Guardian, London – and had 15 articles published. And he had plenty of opportunities to experience real-life journalism.

He went out with another reporter to interview residents about a murder in Mitcham. Then a week later he covered the memorial service. There was a one minute silence and a chance to interview the victim´s friends and relatives one week on.

He also covered a protest at Merton Civic Centre over a council tax rise, and interviewed a Lib Dem councillor about a scheme to give every resident in the borough £91 rebate.

Success stories

What are you up to?

Make sure you tell us about your successes – either in getting work experience, a job or articles published. Email us

And please let us know if you hear about any work or publishing opportunities that we can pass on to other students – or you can post them on our group.

If you haven´t had work published – now´s the time to start! All the students mentioned above were beginners, but showed what can be done. We have literally dozens of stories like these.

But they key point is: MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Joining forces

The NCTJ has joined forces with the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) and the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) to help develop multi-media journalism training.

The joint council, facilitated by the Society of Editors, seeks to identify common areas of training that meet the needs of employers across different media.

Cracking the code

Copies of the new Editors´ Codebook are now available from the Press Complaints Commission. They cost £5 a copy, including postage and packing.

Exam entries

The closing date for entering the next round of NCTJ exams is Friday April 10, 2009. So you need to start thinking about entries.

The exams cost £37.19 each. You can download a form from http://www.nctj.com/storage_CMS/pdf/36/NationalsApplication-May2009.pdf

Please note that entries should go to the NCTJ – not to us.

You may wish to discuss with us which exams to enter. This is not a problem – just email us and we will help you.

The exam dates DO NOT apply to the Portfolio – there is no fixed deadline for your submission.

Please let us know which exams you enter – and ask us for:

  1. Tips files in all subjects that you are entering.
  2. A Revision Guide for Law 1 and Law 2.
  3. Mock papers for the News Writing exam.

Once you have entered an exam, you can DEFER your entry to the next sitting (November 2009) provided you notify the NCTJ by Tuesday April 28, 2009.

Please remember, we do not provide mock papers for Law or PA – the recent exam questions are in the Modules.

If you are disabled and need special facilities, you must supply written evidence to the NCTJ including a professional assessment report and/or medical certificate with your application form. This assessment needs to be received at least two weeks before exam date.

If you wish to sit the exams in another country, you should contact your local British Council NOW.

You will need to ask them to host the exams for you. This will involve receiving the exam papers from the NCTJ, invigilating them, and posting the completed paper(s) back to the NCTJ for marking.

The British Council are usually very happy to help in this way, but may make a small charge. Once you have their agreement, they will need to write to the NCTJ to confirm the arrangements are acceptable.

You can find your country's British Council by typing British Council your country (eg British Council Spain) in your search engine.

Please contact us if you need any help or support during the exam entry process.
